Staying on good terms with your next door neighbors is essential for successful apartment living. Since it can be difficult to know how friendly is too friendly, or when the appropriate amount of time has passed until you can ask for favors, we have some great tips for making you the best neighbor on the block.
SAY “HI”
Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself and make connections with your neighbors. If you live in a large apartment building, it’s nice to establish that one-on-one interaction and develop a neighborly relationship going forward. Take advantage of summer bashes or holiday parties your community organizes; it’s a great way to meet others in your neighborhood. Remember, a simple “hi” goes a long way.
KEEP YOUR NEIGHBORS IN THE LOOP
Whether you’re throwing a party or having work done on the apartment, it’s a nice gesture to keep your neighbors informed. Being considerate will most likely make them respectful towards you, which can proactively eliminate any tension down the road.
BORROW AND RETURN
Having neighbors close by is convenient for those times when you need a pair of hands to help move a large table up the stairs or when in need of a cup of sugar. If they do stuff for you, return the favor. Don’t be that neighbor that never reciprocates. Always help out when you can, and they will do the same. Forgetting to return the DVD you borrowed can make for an awkward encounter.
LITTLE GESTURES CAN GO A LONG WAY
Offer to collect the newspaper, water the plants or feed their pets while your neighbors are on vacation. These types of acts can help build a relationship, and your neighbors will be inclined to return the favor when you need it.
